Livestock health flagship – integrated solutions to tackle disease constraints

Blog post

A poster by scientists at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Swedish Agriculture University (SLU) highlights the role of the livestock health flagship program in addressing health-related issues in selected value chains.

The livestock health flagship of the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock, in collaboration with other flagships in the program, uses an integrated approach to tackle key livestock health-related challenges by combining field-based and laboratory research covering areas from prioritization to deployment of veterinary products and services.

The poster was prepared for 7th Multi-Stakeholder Partnership meeting of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) held in Ethiopia 8-12 May 2017. Key messages in the poster include:

  • Animal diseases cause immense production losses globally, threatening livelihoods and food security of livestock keepers
  • Most emerging infectious diseases in humans are zoonotic, with livestock keepers at high risk of exposure to these threats.
  • Improved animal‐health management mitigates production losses and increases the availability of nutritious and safe animal‐source foods.
