Twenty-five livestock value chain development experts and researchers were trained on gender capacity development in a course facilitated by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) on 23-27 October 2017.
The training, which was held at the ILRI campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focused on strengthening gender capacities of the livestock value chain partners at an individual and organizational level. It was part of a series of training covering four areas of gender capacity development including gender analysis for value chain development, gender strategy development, gender-responsive organizations and monitoring and documentation.
The participants learned how to:
- develop gender-responsive programs, strategies, and interventions,
- identify what characterizes gender responsive organizations,
- plan and implement gender-responsive monitoring and documentation activities, and
- design action plans to apply the acquired knowledge and skills.
The tools and basics of gender strategy development, gender mainstreaming and gendered monitoring and evaluations among others tools and their use were demonstrated to the participants. In a preceding training, in November 2016, trainees had learned about the concepts of value chain development analysis.
On the last day of this workshop, participants developed a gender strategy and action plan for their organizations. They will be supported by ILRI and ICARDA, through coaching and mentoring and experimental learning approaches, to implement these plans and to use the knowledge and skills gained in the workshop.
The workshop was a response to six program partners’ needs that were identified following a December 2014 – September 2015 gender capacity assessment carried out by ILRI, ICARDA and Transition International in the country.
Participants included staff from the Areka Agriculture Research Centre, the Doyogena Woreda Office of Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, the Yabello Dryland and Pastoral Agricultural Research Centre, the Yabello Woreda Office of Pastoralist Development, the Bako Agricultural Research Centre and the Horro Woreda Office of Agriculture and Natural Resource Management and Livestock Agency.
