Uganda

The CGIAR Research Program on Livestock in Uganda is developing and testing an environmentally sustainable and gender inclusive integrated intervention package that aims to improve pig productivity and incomes of value chain actors.

How are we doing this?

  • Piloting and evaluating innovative market arrangements at the level of pig market aggregators to strengthen market linkages between them and pig farmers and link the farmers to input and service providers to incentivize uptake of productivity-enhancing technologies and herd health practices, provided by the technology flagships
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating an integrated strategy for improving pig productivity and performance through pig herd health practices, reproductive management, improved genetics, and better feeding, and linked to the market arrangements in objective 1 to incentivize uptake.
  • Developing, testing and evaluating best-bet interventions to reduce the environmental footprint of pigs through waste management and adaptation to heat stress, and develop environmental assessments of different packages of interventions in terms of water and land, competition with human food and considering future climate change.
  • Strengthening the national and regional pig multi-stakeholder platforms (MSPs) and catalyze lower level MSPs to facilitate learning, raise visibility and advocate for the pig sector.

Uganda is one of four priority countries that serve as the laboratory to demonstrate how technological and institutional innovations can be integrated into real life interventions. The other countries are Ethiopia, Tanzania and Vietnam.
