New livestock project in Vietnam can help improve livelihoods of ethnic minorities

The CGIAR Research Program on Livestock  (Livestock CRP) recently launched a new project in Son La Province, in the northwest highland region of Vietnam. This research-for-development project will promote and scale up livestock-based technologies to generate better livelihoods for livestock keepers, with a particular focus on ethnic minorities. In addition to scaling up technologies, researchers will develop additional options to enable market linkages for local livestock products and lessen negative impacts of livestock production on the environment. In June, partners working on the Maziwa Zaidi dairy project in Tanzania agreed key aims and directions for the coming phase of the dairy value chain upgrading project (until the end of 2021). Coordinated by Amos Omore of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRi), the project contributes to an inclusive and sustainable development of the Tanzania dairy value chain. Uganda pig value chain project to develop environmentally-sustainable, gender-inclusive intervention packages

In July, partners in the current smallholder pigs value chain development project in Uganda met to formulate priority actions for the coming years (until the end of 2021). Coordinated by Ben Lukuyu from the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the project aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers through a market systems approach that supports stronger and more profitable market linkages between pig aggregators (buyers) and pig producers. Integrated ‘smart’ packages the focus of next phase small ruminant value chain project in Ethiopia

In May, partners in the current Small Ruminant value chain Transformation in Ethiopia (SMaRT) project met to formulate priority actions for the coming years (until the end of 2021). The project will consolidate research to date, translating it into an integrated package of interventions that can be tested at greater scales. Combining inputs and expertise from across the research program and its partners, the project objective is to consolidate, implement, evaluate and promote a ‘SMaRT pack’ of technologies and innovations at producer level while ensuring equitable access to input supplies and services and political support.
