Developing a CGIAR Livestock research program – Contribute your ideas to the proposal

In recent months, a group of organizations has been developing ideas and plans for a proposed CGIAR Research Program on Livestock Agri-food Systems (see background and basic elements).

The full proposal will be submitted for extensive review on 31 March 2016.

In February 2016, we seek inputs and comments from anyone with interests in livestock and animal research in development.

How the consultation works:

  1. We have published short summaries of different key elements of the proposal on this site.
  2. For each, we have identified a critical question or two where we seek inputs.
  3. You are invited to give your reactions and inputs to the questions via the associated ‘comment’ option.
  4. We have posted several questions; you are free to answer any that interest you.

The inputs will be fed directly into the ongoing proposal development activities.  We will later share back the full proposal.

Alongside this online process, we are organizing various smaller face to face meetings in different locations to discuss similar questions. We will share the feedback here.

  1. Genetics:
Expectation : Improved breeds of animals readily available that can be widely and sustainably used. This can be achieved through: (i) application of new opportunities in genomic and reproductive technology, (ii) the supply of institutional and policy supports, (iii) involving youth and women and by (iv) undertaking researches in livestock genetics and genomic

    Feeds and forage:
Expectation: Increased livestock productivity. This may be achieved by working on more and better forages, new strategies to use existing feeds and forages better.

    Livestock and environment:
Expectation : Animals that are adapted to environmental changes. This may be achieved through (i) contributing evidences to global debate on livestock and environment that is particular to the developing world and using field research to provide context – specific solutions (ii) optimizing natural resources use and enhance the provision of ecosystem services.

    Livestock livelihood and animal sources:
Expectations: Improved animal source food system. This may be achieved by enhancing nutrition through livestock i.e nutrition- sensitive and cost-effective livestock interventions, market and investment assessment and opportunities to improve nutrition.

  2. livestock livelihood and animal sources:This may be achieved by strengthening research on sustainable husbandry of small holder livestock keepers on management skills, extension packages value chain development of livestock like rabbits, indigenous poultry which can be scalled up to improve nutrition and incomes of rural poor and women. Energy in youth should be harnest through policy guidelines to move towards cost effective livestock production interventions for local and external markets.

  3. 3. What are the top issues that should drive research on the sustainable intensification of livestock-based systems?
As I mentionned in the previous point, in developpping country there are various difference of livestock systems and opportunities (availability of food, biosecurity, animal species, markets, policy…) to achieve a sustainable intensification of livestock-based systems. These difference should be also analysed in the regions within a same country if possible. Resaech should take account these difference before implementing any research. Analyse of challenges (land availability, poor livestock policy, poor market..)and opportunities (land availability, good policy, security, good markets..) of each country or region involved on the resarch is recommended. Some countries have many opportunities and can boost quickly a sustainable intensification of livestock if somme gaps are remouved or taken account.

    4. What are the top issues that should drive research on enhanced resilience for livestock-based livelihoods?

Dissemination should play a good role to ensure that technologies implemented will be sustainable after the project.

  4. Thank you Peter, for the request of our proposals and participation with you in carrying out the researches on the livestock productions.

I would like to suggest the following:

    1. Development of the feeds and their productions from the local raw materials,
    2. Feeding and assessment of the growth of the animals,
    3. Market demands and successes of the feeds utilizations.

  5. I suggested using locally available resources in a local areas and advised the people where necessary in feeding their livestock’s.
